We Won!

The Mid-Atlantic Cake Show was once again quite entertaining. Princess Pea and I each entered a cake. The show was much larger than last year, so we had a lot more competition. Last year, there were six cakes in the 8 and Under category; this year PP’s cake was the 18th one entered. She got an honorable mention, which resulted in many tears, until she saw the ribbon was pink. As she told Norm Davis, “Screw blue, I like pink better!” Ah, my little potty mouth. She was happy to see that the winner of the whole Youth Division was in the 9-12 category, her category for next year. It gave her hope that she could beat out the 17 year old kids with some practice. Her desert cake was inspired by a tortoise figurine she saw at the craft store. The figurines include a tortoise, a coyote, several rocks & cacti, and a cow skull. Around the sides are western-inspired silhouettes.

Most of her cake buddies from last year remembered her, which made her weekend. They asked if she had entered another cake, and several of them went over so she could show it off. We printed out the pictures from last year, and she signed copies to give to them, and she had them sign copies for her to keep. It was very cute, and there are now several famous people with autographed photos of Princess Pea.

I went up to Semi-Professional this year, two divisions higher than last year. I didn’t win, but I did get second in my category – Semi-Pro Non-Tiered. We’re both going to practice for next year. My elephant was inspired by the special Sri Lanka day at the National Zoo a few months ago. It was my husband’s idea, and while I was rather reluctant at first, I think it turned out really well. Her name was Lakshmi, and she made lots of kids happy when we ate her at our homeschool Earth Day party a couple of days later. Kids like to eat fondant. I don’t get it.

There were some truly awe inspiring cakes there this year. PP and I are going to do a lot of practicing this year, and you’ll see both of us with big fat blue ribbons next year.
